If an umbilical hernia isn't causing you any problems, is surgery needed?

I'm wondering if i need to get surgery to repair my hernia that I have had since I was a baby. It isn't causing me any problems, so do you think surgery is needed? I tried calling my doctor but he is unavailable at the moment.
