Magpies..Why are they generally regarded as being an unlucky omen?

All black and white things were once thought to belong to the devil. Birds have often been known as psycho-pomps - leading the spirits of the dead to the underworld or heralding death by strange behaviour ( it is an ill omen if a robin comes into your house). I think that is why.
